Downturn in Columbus Public School Enrollments Persists

Columbus board heard that 1975 to 1976 census figures show continued decline in enrollments across age groups and attendance areas. Superintendent Bellum will present a full report next month with possible attendance-center reconfigurations, including discussion of Lincoln School closure.

UAW close to call on Ford pact ratification

UAW voting remained too close to call on a tentative three year contract to end Ford’s four week strike. Production workers vote appeared to favor the pact by more than two to one, but skilled tradesmen their decisions could overturn the result. Local results from Dearborn Monroe and Tulsa showed mixed margins as ballots continued at 102 facilities across 22 states.

Court upholds Watergate convictions for three aides

The U.S. Circuit Court affirmed the Watergate cover up convictions of John Mitchell John Ehrlichman and H R Haldeman in a 201 page ruling stating there was no reversible error Judge Sirica had sentenced each to two and a half to eight years for conspiracy obstruction of justice and related counts Robert Mardian had his conspiracy conviction reversed and faces possible retrial Mardian was sentenced to 10 to 30 months with the option of retry or appeal left to prosecutors

Ford admits error and defends Eastern Europe stance

President Ford acknowledged a misstep over claiming Eastern European nations were free of Soviet domination. He criticized Jimmy Carter as weak on American strength and urged voters to judge his opponent's leadership while detailing his own position on Soviet influence in Eastern Europe.

Civil Defense Exercise Set for Region Six Test

The Columbus Platte County Civil Defense Agency will join a region wide warning exercise initiated by NORAD from Cheyenne Mountain. Sirens will sound nationwide for three minutes then stop to cue radios to EBS station KJSK for information.

Nebraskans enjoy mild autumn day with warming Wednesday

Balmy weather continued with 71 at 1 p.m. and 57 this morning. Highs reached 60s to 70s across the state with Grand Island and Lincoln at 88, 19 degrees above Scottsbluff. Tonight will be clear to partly cloudy with lows in the 30s. Wednesday should see mid 70s to around 80.

Lakeview Board Approves Band Access and Practice Schedule

Lakeview High School Board conducted routine business. A Sunday practice ban with prior board approval was discussed, Title IX compliance review by Supt. Kamm and Dedrickson assigned, and a proposal allowing Dist 5R students to join the elementary band was approved. A basketball practice schedule was set: 6:30 pm Wednesday and 8 pm Monday Tuesday Thursday.

Supreme Court rejects challenge to broadcasting rules

The Supreme Court refused to hear challenges to FCC broadcasting rules allowing candidate news conferences and debates to air without equal time for opponents. The decisions upheld a 2 1 ruling from last April and involved the Socialist Workers Party and others.CBS sought changes after Ford announced his candidacy in 1975.
