Recall of educational aids for blind and handicapped children

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled over 10,000 federally financed teaching aids from the American Printing House for the Blind due to sharp edges and lead paint hazards. The recall, tied to a $2.7 million federal appropriation, followed a BGA investigation led by J Terrence Brunner who cited paint lead levels 14 times above standards and sharp edges harming children. A separate energy tax debate noted in Congress described a conference strategy to salvage Carter era plans, with mixed Republican support and concerns about raising taxes.
