United Way Drive Reaches 50 Percent of Goal

Prent Roth announces the United Way has hit 4 per cent of its 85 150 goal this week as the drive progresses. He notes strong community participation and expects the general drive to finish within ten days. Residential areas are 25 per cent complete. Local firms adding to contributor list include Culligan Water Conditioning Rogers Riley Motors Marshall Nelson Realty and Insurance Fleischer Manufacturing and BW Beck and Associates.

No opposition voiced at Columbus road plan hearing

At a Columbus highway design hearing 37 attendees heard five state road and highway commission members present details on a 23rd Street improvement from 33rd Avenue. Estimated 1977 cost 1.465 million with 70 percent federal funds and 499,500 city share. If approved, right of way acquisition could begin in 1979, with construction in 1981.

Fate of hijackers undecided in Algiers

Algerian officials said the fate of the Japanese Red Army hijackers on the Japan Airlines DC8 was undecided as the last 12 hostages left Algiers. Tokyo had not sought extradition, while Japan prepared to accept the ransom and political asylum rumored for the extremists.

Propane Burned Off At Cengas Site To Safely Repair Tank

Propane is being burned off at a Cengas site by 12th Avenue along the railroad tracks as a safety measure after a tank malfunction. Ed Porter says most gas is redirected to other tanks and the flame will end once the tank is emptied for repairs, with no danger from the torch.

United Press International reports a cold front from northeast Nebraska triggered scattered showers and thunderstorms across central and eastern Nebraska. Highs ranged from the 50s to 70s with cooler air following and overnight lows in the 30s and 40s.

Nebraka guards honored with Outstanding Soldier awards

Specialist Korte and eighteen Army and Air National Guard members from Nebraska were honored at Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum in Omaha. The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben awarded the Outstanding Soldier to reserve members from multiple services, with gold medals presented before the rodeo. Jerry V. Korte of Columbus, 21, an observer with Company C Detachment 1 1st Battalion 33rd Infantry, Lakeview High School graduate, will earn an agricultural degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in December. He attended the ceremony with Nancy Folken of Lincoln, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Korte.
