A survey of Lower Loop NRD land in Boone, Wheeler, Greeley, Howard, Garfield, Valley, and Sherman counties reports 9,563 acres of forest compared with 29,400 acres in 1955. Over 21 years, 67 percent of former woodland converted to other uses, with some counties above 80 percent. Despite the NRD's large tree planting program, losses outpace planting and cropland conversion continues.
