Thanksgiving speed limit toll rises amid stormy weekend

Traffic safety officials credited bad weather for keeping millions indoors as Thanksgiving travel was lighter than typical four day tolls. NSC warned 480 to 560 could die and 20 000 to 95 000 suffer disabling injuries over the weekend with a UPI count at 1 am showing 137 deaths since Wednesday. Missouri crash killed four young men in a head on collision near Labadle and Villa Ridge, Ray Noer 21 and Raynold Baker 40 among victims. Baker hospitalized. A twin engine plane crashed near Raleigh County Airport in Beckley killing six.

Egypt invites Palestinian leaders for talks in Cairo

Egypt plans to invite Palestinian leaders living in Israel and Israeli-occupied lands to visit Cairo for peace talks. The move aims to undercut the Palestine Liberation Organization, following a decision by the Arab Socialist Party of Egypt at a Thursday meeting.

Platte College hosts seventh annual Speech Activities Day

Nearly 40 students from 19 area high schools will compete in Platte College's seventh Speech Activities Day on December 3. The event, limited to B to D class schools, features junior and senior divisions with ten events and medals for top placements. Water service outage hits several Columbus areas this week

Water lines from the new reservoir north of Columbus will be tied to the existing system today and Saturday during daylight hours. Several additions and streets will be without water, including Brunken Maple Mimick Lange Lost Creek Prairie Becker subdivisions and 38rd Avenue from 3rd to 40th Streets and 27th Street from 2rd to 34rd. Laid Avenue north of 27th Street closes Friday and Saturday with a detour on 27th to dist Avenue then 30th Street. valves will not be turned on yet but will before spring. Exon Warner to discuss state employee salaries in Lincoln

Gov J James Exon will meet Sen Jerome Warner to seek agreement on salary increases for state workers about 5 percent for fiscal 1978 and possible changes in salary schedules. Warner favors discussing middle echelon pay and keeping school aid at 55 million while aiming for 73 million later.

Record cold grips Nebraska with near freezing Omaha low

A cold front and high pressure combined to set record cold for Nebraska. National Weather Service Omaha reported 4 degrees in Omaha for November 23, a new low for the date, with teens midday and highs in the 20s to 40s regionally. Winds, snow flurries, and gusts accompanied the chill across counties, with overnight lows ranging 10 to 26 in several towns.
