Brown grads study Rhode Island drinking customs for five years
Providence reports Brown University researchers begin a five year project funded by a 320 724 grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to compare ethnic and social drinking habits in Rhode Island. The study uses participant observation living with communities to examine attitudes and rituals surrounding drinking across Chinese families sailors businessmen and middle aged women. Heath notes differences in how men and women are taught to drink and how cultural context shapes use and perceptions.
