Utah Supreme Court Cancelled Stay of Gilmore Execution
Utah Supreme Court reversed a stay of execution for Gary Gilmore and dismissed an appeal. Gilmore, a 35 year old Oregon parolee, accepted the death penalty for killing motel clerk Bennie Bushnell during a 1976 robbery attempt. The case could lead to Utah carrying out the longest period without an execution in American history.

Ex-con to county judge: Robert Y. Young's unlikely path
Robert Y. Young, 36, an ex convict and motorcycle enthusiast, will be sworn in January 3 as a Justice Court judge in Placer County California after defeating a law and order candidate by 335 votes. He will work full time at a $12,000 salary, taking a $7,000 cut from his prior post as assistant public defender. Young says the system must help punished individuals rebuild self respect and avoid reoffending. He credits prison experiences with shaping his decision to become a lawyer and serve as a corrective force in the justice system. He and his wife Linda live with an adopted son and nine motorcycles on 11 acres.
