Nebraska Hearing on Transbasin Water Diversion Fears Federal Scheme
Lincoln Nebraska UPI Don Nelson head of the State Office of Planning and Programming warned the federal government may craft a scheme to market water in the High Plains. He urged Nebraska to act to protect its water rights as a legislative hearing on transbasin diversions explored ownership of surface and groundwater and the risk a federal judge could redefine ownership. Senator Loran Schmit questioned agricultural overproduction amid low prices and warned water use will determine land use and could shift resources to other states. He noted Nebraska’s abundant underground water but small population could lose access to it.
