Blizzard lashes Columbus and much of Nebraska as first snow of the year covers the region. Residents wake to contrasting scenes of calm and whiteout conditions, with % inches reported in Columbus and more across nearby towns.
UPI reports Israeli warplanes struck Palestinian targets around Tyre Lebanon injuring about 100 with at least 69 dead including Palestinians and Lebanese. Israeli officials claim the bases hit were extremist camps while denying civilian harm and warning Syrians to curb guerrilla actions as ceasefire terms hang in the balance.
President Carter urges Americans to curb energy waste as he presses for new laws. He vows to veto any measure failing to be fair to consumers and producers, conserve scarce fuels, and maintain economic responsibility. He criticizes oil profits and calls for price reforms while warning of higher energy costs. The speech emphasizes national security and jobs as key stakes.
The U S Postal Service says surface mail embargo is lifted for most countries with exceptions in Puerto Rico and U S Virgin Islands and Europe. Postmaster Vern Zimmerman urges Christmas delivery mail by November 11. The ongoing longshoremen strike continues to disrupt surface mail to Europe and Great Britain.

The Columbus Nebraska Job Service reports 640 on site applicants at month end with clerical workers forming the largest group. Production positions rose after layoffs at two plants. 118 women and 2% veterans completed applications in October as 14 openings were posted by employers.
A late season blizzard roared through eastern and western Nebraska with 60 mph gusts and up to four inches of new snow. Schools closed across multiple districts, power outages reported in several towns, I 80 traffic halted in places, and widespread caution remained as crews cleared roads and outages eased by mid morning.
