Million-Dollar Theft Targets Cologne Cathedral Loot
In West Germany a daring Topkapi style robbery at Cologne Cathedral saw thieves use mountain climbing gear to steal 15 religious objects and precious stones valued between 2 million and 8 million dollars. A worldwide search and a $20,000 reward were issued by the Roman Catholic Church, with at least two suspects involved. The heist occurred after an elderly night watchman heard noises at 12:30 a.m. Sunday and responders found pilfered crucifixes, a bishop’s wing, pearls and diamonds.
