Tales of Platte County A fable about John Messing’s giant ear of corn
Francis M. Dischner recounts the Columbus Nebraska craftsman John Messing a retired farmer who built intricate wood inlays and a legendary seven inch diameter twenty seven inch long corn cob. The tale ties his craft to a 1926 giant ear exhibit and a Louisville Nebraska parade stunt that drew national attention. He created dozens of carved wooden pieces and mainly gave them away to family and friends.
