The Commerce Department reports April personal income up 0.7 percent to 1.49 trillion annual rate, a smaller gain after February and March surges. Wages and salaries climb 9.9 billion, while private payrolls grow more slowly than in March.
Columbus hosts the first use of the new Senior Citizens Center on 14th Street between 25th and 26th Avenues, occupying part of the old city auditorium with the firemen sharing the building. A six month trial began April 6 and runs to October 15, with plans for daily activities, reading room, and RSVP program to involve more groups and volunteers.
Weekend showers and thundershowers are forecast across Nebraska with a front and low pressure in the panhandle driving the risk. Tornado watches were issued for south central Nebraska and parts of eastern Colorado and western Kansas. Temperatures range from the upper 40s to mid 80s with mixed rain chances through Friday to Sunday. A livestock weather safety warning was issued for eastern Nebraska due to heat and humidity.
President Carter said the Soviet Union has an intercontinental SS18 missile with eight to 12 warheads and tremendous explosive capacity. He spoke to congressional leaders in a Cabinet Room briefing on U S positions in the renewed SALT talks and noted U S cruise and submarine missiles offset a Soviet lead.
Columbus Senior High plans commencement for 8 p.m. May 23 in the gym with Dr. H. Vaughn Phelps as keynote and James Sterup presiding. Baccalaureate is May 22 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium with Rev. Philip Bede speaking and class participants.
Platte County Board of Supervisors rescinded a prior motion to hire Duren & Associates for budget work and will seek state auditor support instead. They approved two Hall of Justice change orders for desks and drawers, and authorized Speicher Subdivision plat by resolution. Supervisors and architects plan a tour today to inspect the nearing completion and note items not yet acceptable.
Nebraska legislators gave second round approval to LB549 authorizing about 14 million in capital construction funds for state agencies. About 3.7 million would come from the general fund with the rest from the revenue sharing trust fund and cigarette tax.
Members of Sts Cyril and Methodius Church in Clarkson plan a June 19 Mass and parish dinner to mark the canonization of Bishop John Neumann, patron of Clarkson’s parochial school. The event follows years of church growth including a 1976 diamond jubilee church dedication and recent yard work for a parking area.
