Voyager probes to carry earth sounds and music into space
UPI reports a NASA led plan coordinated by Carl Sagan to place recordings on the Voyager probes. The discs will include human greetings in multiple languages, sounds from Earth, music including Bach, and scientific data tones. Probes launch from Cape Canaveral in August and September on missions to Jupiter, Saturn, and possibly Uranus or Neptune, destined to wander the galaxy for eons.

House panel approves federal aid for crime victim payments
A House judiciary subcommittee approved a bill to let the federal government reimburse states up to 50 percent of crime victim compensation for medical costs, lost wages and other expenses. The bill sets up a $150 million price tag and a $50 000 per person cap, with a $100 loss or five days wage minimum before payments. The Senate has passed similar measures previously.

The House Government Operations Committee approved Carter’s plan for a cabinet level Department of Energy by a 352 vote, preserving the secretary’s power to set oil and natural gas prices in the bill’s controversial section. Lincoln Neb state Tax Commissioner Bill Peters released a revised forecast showing net general fund receipts for Fiscal 1977 78 at about 518.2 million, roughly 4.0 million below the prior projection.
