Island of Hope opens halfway house in St Bernard Neb
Deb Gondringer reports Dick and Donna Stanley moved from Red Oak Iowa to St Bernard Nebraska in November 1974 to run a nonprofit halfway house for alcoholics. The Island of Hope funded the project using former parish buildings as a monastery while renovations continue. Eight clients currently reside with plans to house 25, plus facilities for women. Clients come from treatment centers via referrals and may pursue work, with on site counseling and AA meetings.

Platte College Holds Fifth Commencement Exercises

Platte College band performs preludes procession and recessional. Open to all interested persons.

Greenspan Says Recession Ending But Unemployment Urges Caution
Washington AP UPI Chairman Alan Greenspan told the House Senate Economic Committee that there is evidence the recession is ending though unemployment will improve only slightly by year’s end. He warned inflation may rise to 6 to 7 percent, not less than 4 percent, and cautioned about risks of boosting the federal deficit. He projected the GNP growth to reach about 7 percent by year end, with signs of recovery spreading to Japan and Germany.
