VA home loan program strong with wide reach

Wesley Peery Found Guilty of First Degree Murder
A Lancaster County jury of five women and seven men convicted Wesley Peery of first degree murder and robbery in the June death of Marianne Mitzner. The panel deliberated about four and a half hours before verdict. Judge Fahrnbruch will decide on death penalty or panel review.

Columbus Man Killed, Elderly Driver in Highway 81 Wreck
An 80 year old Columbus man, Thomas Franklin Overturf, died in a two car collision on Highway 81 eleven miles south of Columbus. Overturf turned to U turn and was struck broadside by a northbound vehicle driven by Elsie Prell of Osceola. Prell, 64, is hospitalized with possible internal injuries and hip injuries. Overturf’s body sent to Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Farm price rise boosts 2 percent in April period
Prices for raw farm products rose 2 percent in the month ended April 15 led by meat animal gains. Milk wheat lettuce and corn fell slightly while overall farm prices were 18 percent higher than a year earlier. Beef cattle hog calf sheep and lamb prices climbed with lambs reaching a record high.

Battle over Hughes will seen as estate eyed in Las Vegas
District Judge Keith Hayes said the $2 billion Howard Hughes estate could face a years long battle even if the will is authenticated. Executors Noah Dietrich and a handwriting expert backed the document as genuine while challenges over competency and duress were mentioned. The first hearing is not expected before May 14 in Las Vegas with potential for a protracted probate.

Columbus moisture totaled 6.18 inches for January–April 1976, about 0.75 inch above the 5.41-inch normal. April rainfall was 2.36 inches, just under the 2.49-inch norm, with a mean April temperature of 54 degrees, 2.8 degrees above normal. The month began dry, then showers balanced the rest, with a high of 82 on the 14th and a record low of 29 on the 1st.
