United Press International reports two Illinois youths, Paul Norman 17 of Elk Grove and James Call Jr. 15 of Bridgeview, walked away from stalled cars during Thursday blizzards on U S 4 80 in western Nebraska. Rescue units with snowplows searched while the Calls sought help, unsure if their son headed toward Big Springs or Julesburg.

Possible twister damages farm buildings near Shelby

Peterson Receives Beatrice State Home Scholarship
Rick Peterson of Columbus, a Midland College senior from Fremont majoring in biology, has been awarded the Beatrice State Home Association for Retarded Children’s first $200 scholarship. Economy shows brighter picture amid easing recession
UPI reports the leading indicators rose 1 percent in February for the first gain in seven months. Oil imports dropped to the lowest since 1973, yielding a February trade surplus of 871 million dollars. Retail sales rose 3.5 percent week over week and 7 percent year over year as automakers plan higher production and recalls rise. Dow Jones gained 18 points to 770.26. Money supply edged down 1.8 billion but growth outpaced the prior 13 weeks. Economists see recovery flaws but expect stronger second-half growth if tax rebates pass. Unemployment seen high through year, inflation around 7 percent.
