Weyand ordered to Saigon to assess military situation

President Ford dispatched Army Chief of Staff Frederick C. Weyand to Saigon to evaluate the South Vietnamese military situation and request for additional U S aid. Weyand, a former U S commander in Vietnam, will brief Thieu and return with recommendations by mid next week.

Chief deputy job to Florendo at Platte County Sheriff

Jack Florendo a Columbus Police captain will join Platte County Sheriff as chief deputy on April 1. Sheriff Don Franzen announced the move making Florendo the 10th deputy, replacing Dennis Ternus who no longer resides in Columbus. Ternus will stay on as a deputy while a replacement is chosen after civil service exam and mayoral recommendation and council approval.

Ziggy the Elephant Escapes Moat Rescue Then Returns

Ziggy a five ton elephant at Brookfield Zoo spent over a day trapped in a moat. After eight hours and two tow trucks he refused help until a keeper opened a shift door to Widget the female elephant. Ziggy walked out unharmed with minor injuries.

Nebraska Weather Outlook Brisk Winds And Snow

United Press International reports mostly cloudy conditions across Nebraska with a warming trend expected Wednesday. Northeast Nebraska saw two to four inches of fresh snow in Emerson Wayne Hartington and more frigid lows ranged from 0 to 17 degrees with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s.

Kissinger Summoned to White House After Faisal Assassination

Negotiators Agree Tax Refund Range For 1974 Returns

Hue Evacuation as South Vietnamese Pull Out

South Vietnamese forces began abandoning Hue in a Dunkirk style retreat. Troops boarded boats under fire at Tan My port for movement toward Da Nang while Communists gained control of 11 of 44 provinces. About 20,000 troops faced an uncertain evacuation time from the walled city.
