Carter plan aims to cut oil spills with tighter standards

The White House outlined strong administrative actions to reduce oil spill risk in U S waters and compensate victims. A possible ban would bar tankers with accident histories from entering U S waters. The program also seeks to reorganize federal oil pollution efforts and potentially ratify the 1973 international convention on pollution from ships.

Platte County Board Denies Rural Road Improvement District

After a public hearing and county attorney review, the Platte County Board of Supervisors denied formation of a rural road improvement district northeast of Columbus. They also approved a $7,555 change order for new treasurer and district court offices, with counters costing about $5,300 and 2,200 respectively. A flood hazard boundary map was received for study and a subdivision discussion yielded five horses allowed on larger tracts.

Nebraska Legislature approves drug code amendment directing patrol focus

In Lincoln the legislature backed a criminal code amendment directing the State Patrol’s drug division to target hard drug violators. Sen. Loran Schmit argued for concentrating on pushers, not users, and noted funding and personnel must support tougher enforcement.

High School Recognition and Achievement Day Set at PTCC

About 450 juniors and seniors from 23 high schools will compete Friday at Platte Technical Community College in six categories mathematics bookkeeping shorthand typewriting chemistry biology and physics. Top winner in each category earns a one year tuition waiver with runners up receiving a one semester waiver. Participants will tour the campus meet faculty and try computer games.

Albion votes down one mile bypass to ease traffic

Albion residents vote 230 against and 221 for a proposed one mile truck bypass at 6th and State Streets. The $40 000 plan would reroute traffic from Highways 91 and 14 around the northeast business district. Mayor Wayne Boilesen said the council may abandon seeking federal aid if results hold.

Nebraska bottle bill defeated in Lincoln vote

Lincoln senators rejected LB310 by a 22 to 20 vote, killing a plan to require deposits on reusable beverage containers and higher deposits on disposables. Sponsors argued it would reduce litter and save energy, while opponents warned of unemployment in the container industry.
