Humphrey spellers shine at Platte County contest

Susan Lloyd an eighth grader from Humphrey Public School won top oral and written honors in the Platte County Schools spelling contest. She spelled veterinary and sterilize correctly and will compete at the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha on March 20. Steve Zach, a Humphrey St. Francis fifth grader, won top honors for fifth and sixth grade written and oral rounds, spelling paralyze and inning. Eighty six students competed under Gladys Breidert with several placers named across grade divisions. Lakeview High School Board of Education will meet at 7 30 p.m. to discuss teacher negotiations and state law clarifications among other items.

Split shift faces Columbus City Schools Board action

The Columbus City Schools Board of Education meets with Supt. Fred Bellum to discuss a split shift schedule. The session runs 4 to 5 30 p m and resumes at 7 30 p m in the administration building. Officials will hear bids, policy on public notices, tuition matters, citizens and parental concerns, and a future athletic program discussion plus an executive session to evaluate staff.

Osceola Teen Dies in Polk County Car Crash

Duane D. Mangelsen aged 18 of Osceola was killed in a two car collision four miles south of Duncan at a Road intersection. Sterling J. Sierdis 54 of Fremont was injured and taken to Behlen Community Hospital then Clarkson Hospital Omaha. Funeral services for Mangelsen are pending at Kepner Roberts Funeral Home Osceola.

Local youth earns appointment to Air Force Academy

James F. George of Columbus has won a U S Air Force Academy appointment in Colorado Springs. He attends Columbus Senior High School and excels in track basketball and tennis while active in the Spanish Club and local church community. Rep Virginia Smith praised his scholastic record and competitive testing.

Insurance bill advances today in Nebraska legislature
