Fernau's Dual Talent Lights Up Dance Hall Era

William Fernau, 79, talentfully plays violin with his feet on pedals linked to organ keys, enabling piano accompaniment for his fiddling. In the 1920s he and brother Warren owned a dance hall near their farm northeast of Ainsworth. Warren moved away to Phoenix. Fernau adapted a pedal piano system but cannot change key signatures mid song.

Thermal Scanning Project planned for Columbus by Cengas

Cengas will conduct an infrared roof temperature survey in Columbus tonight using a Remote Sensing Institute team from South Dakota State University. The 14 flyovers at 1600 feet aim to identify heat loss in homes and businesses and guide owners on energy savings.

Sniper kills gunman after French Quarter shootout

In New Orleans a sniper wounded at least three police and a bystander before was killed by officers one hour after the first shots. Police ringed the Bourbon Street area as tear gas and talks failed to coax the shooter out of a two story hideout. several victims were taken to Charity Hospital.

Fire at Carillon Hotel Evacuates 606 Guests in Miami Beach

A Friday night blaze at the Carillon Hotel in Miami Beach evacuated all 606 guest rooms. Nine Miami Beach Fire Department units responded after a 9:46 p.m. call. by 10:30 p.m. the fire was under control and guests were cleared from the building amid traffic tie ups on Collins Ave. No confirmed injuries were reported, and cause was not immediately known.

Taft to enter hospital for cataract operation

Senator Robert Taft Jr of Ohio will enter a Cincinnati hospital Tuesday for a cataract operation on his right eye. He has been recovering at home after a heart attack and recent discharge from Bethesda Naval Hospital, with his recovery sufficient to proceed with the postponed eye surgery.
