Ford extends amnesty program to March 31
UPI reports President Ford extended the earned clemency program for Vietnam War opponents by one month to March 31. Staff said this was the final extension though the program was due to end Saturday, as war resisters planned a protest in front of the White House.

Petition Drive for Human Life Amendment Reported
Columbus Area Right to Life held a Thursday meeting at the Equitable community room led by John Love. Four thousand signatures were gathered in zip code 686 as the group plans to send the petition to Rep. Virginia Smith with a March deadline. Teresa Reuter of the Nebraska Coalition for Life noted the amendment’s Senate and House resubmission by Buckley and Oberstar and mentioned copies are available. A 1974 abortion statistic of 900,000 nationwide was cited. The group voted to buy population books for Columbus schools and libraries. Next meeting is March 20.

Budget Receives Committee Okay For Correctional Budget
Lincoln Nebraska budget action approves a $10 million state tax plan for the Department of Correctional Services. The package funds penal reform projects in Columbus Omaha Scotts Bluff and the Kearney Hastings Grand Island region with a 90 percent federal share and includes jail standards parole reforms and a halfway house. The total department budget reaches about $14 million with over half in operating the penitentiary and reform facilities.
