Lebanese hijacker surrenders after Gulf Air jet diverted

The Beirut bound Gulf Air flight from London to Oman was hijacked by a 26 year old Lebanese man from Bint Jbeil. He demanded half a million rials and safe passage, released 50 passengers and 9 crew after two hours of negotiations. Qatar's Crown Prince personally negotiated, the plane landed with 15 minutes fuel and returned to Oman on another plane.

Economic index dips as money supply drives May decline

The Index of Leading Economic Indicators fell 0.2 percent in May, the Commerce Department said, with the shrinking money supply down 1.2 billion to 222.1 billion in 1972 dollars cited as the main cause. Driver avoids serious injuries in truck train crash

Jerome Harris of Shelby escaped serious harm after his pickup collided with a railroad switch engine on the Albion spur south of the Alfa Meal plant in northwest Columbus. Deputies report Harris was treated at Columbus Hospital for broken ribs and bruises. engine operator Dennis O Connor of Council Bluffs said he did not see the truck until impact and moves slowly. Nebraska Warmup Seen As Pacific Front Moves In

United Press International reports clear skies and mild temperatures across Nebraska with a Pacific cold front building from the northern Rocky Mountains. The front will push southeast bringing warmer air and southerly winds around 20 to 30 mph, while western Nebraska sees increasing clouds by midday.

High court bars death penalty for rape without murder

The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that executing a rape offender where no life is taken is cruel and unusual punishment. The decision voids death sentences for Ehrlich Anthony Goker and affects four Georgia inmates and one in Florida, arguing rape is disproportionate to murder. Justice White led the majority. Justices reverse judge on funding of abortions

The Supreme Court told District Judge John Dooling to reconsider his ruling blocking the Hyde Amendment.
