Penn Central Files for Reorganization Amid 62 Million First Quarter Loss
Penn Central Transportation Co, a 28 month old giant with 100000 commuters, filed for reorganization under bankruptcy laws after posting a 62.7 million loss in the first quarter. The company seeks to halt immediate interest payments to bondholders while it restructures, after being rebuffed by Nixon officials on a 200 million government loan. Stock tumbled from 863 to 4.50, markets wary of wider corporate distress as the system operates 20530 miles of track across 16 states and two Canadian provinces and carries 35 percent of US rail passengers. Also notes peace proposals in the Middle East, border air raids near Damascus, and Nixon’s 18-year-old voting age bill with court test. A South Vietnamese court martial case sentenced a former American to life with dishonorable discharge for killing 12 civilians.
