Proposals for Social Security tax hike within 18 months
Two former Social Security officials testified on altering tax levels to shore up finances. Ball urged raising the wage base to 24,000 in 1977 with a 50 percent max tax increase for high earners, while Myers urged a smaller 0.5 percentage point rise phased in, affecting all workers and potentially lifting the 1976 maximum to 1,047.75. Both cautioned against alarmist deficit talk and agreed new revenue is needed.
