McMillan Faces Runoff in South Carolina Primary

In South Carolina, 72 year old Congressman John L. McMillan fell short of a majority in a nine county Democratic primary runoff race. A Black physician, Dr. Claude L. Stephens, 39, led the contest and could meet McMillan in a June runoff after unofficial tallies show McMillan with 28 001 votes to Stephens 11 265 with other candidates far behind. Stephens drew strong backing from about 44 000 Black voters in the district.

Government to help railroad bail out Penn Central

Congressional leaders and Nixon administration officials announced an 800 million dollar plan to extend federal credit guarantees for Penn Central Railroad. The measure would guarantee 750 million in long and short term loans plus 50 million in short term credits under the Defense Production Act to avert a possible collapse.
