United Press International reports Nebraska will see partly cloudy skies with warm temperatures and a chance of afternoon and nighttime thundershowers through Friday. A weak warm front drifts east across the region, bringing light rain in northern Nebraska while most areas stay sunny. Winds from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph gust to 30 mph in the east, with midday temps in the 60s and 70s and overnight lows from 36 to 65. Wednesday highs range from 84 to 98, with Panhandle thunder activity and localized rainfall totals reported in Scottsbluff and Sidney. Tonight, lows in the upper 60s to mid 60s and Friday highs in the 90s.

County buys new motor grader for 62500 lease deal

Wreck Kills Coloradan in Two-Car Crash West of Columbus
A two car collision three miles west of Columbus on Highway 30 killed Jane K Velveld 16 of Denver. Her mother Jo Anna Velveld 84 of Sioux Falls SD and Cornelia K Van Grouw 50 of Inwood IA were injured. Robert W Wheeler Jr 20 of Grand Island was hospitalized with facial injuries. Rescue crews used the Jaws of Life to free Velveld’s mother, shortening extrication and likely saving her life.

House committee nixes car rebate and eases gas tax plan
The House Ways and Means Committee voted 315 to 0 to drop President Carter's car rebate and 24 to 13 to adopt a substitute tax plan. It would exempt 1978 special cars from the tax and tax fewer gas guzzlers in later years. The panel also approved a Carter proposal for tax credits for homeowners who install solar energy systems, plus windmill generators, up to 2000 dollars on expenditures up to 10000. The program would end in 1982.

Greek woman gives birth to octuplets amid tragedy
Greek woman Cleo Zerbini from Mytilene delivered eight babies two months early after fertility pills. Six died within hours, two, a girl and a boy, survived in critical condition. Doctor Panagolis Malakos said births occurred in 19 minutes and several infants weighed around 1 pound 6 to 1 pound 12 ounces. The family’s prior quadruplets died after birth. It was the first confirmed live octuplets since Mexico in 1967, all eight died in Mexico.
