May Auto Sales Show Brighter Signs in Detroit
May sales, the best since October 1974, rose 17 percent over April as imports slip below 20 percent of the U.S. market. Yet overall May volumes remain 21 percent below last year, with Chrysler, Ford, GM and AMC down sharply while rebates spur a late April–May uptick. Dealers note buyers hesitate amid Washington energy policy uncertainty while some see tax rebates as too modest to move the market. Domestic sales reached 102,789 cars in May, a high daily-rate for the period since October.
