A Tuller County native, Hopkins operates a 240 acre farm between Clear Creek and the Pine River. The grounds host beaver, game birds, horses, ponies, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks and birds. Nebraska all farm price index for the month ending May 15 dropped 1 point from last year. Declines hit both crops and livestock with the crops index down five and livestock and products lower by about one point. Candy wheat rose slightly while other crops mostly fell. Milk, cans, and wholesale items showed higher prices.
Lincoln Nebraska April red meat production reached 280 million pounds, up 7 percent from March and higher than April 1969. Cattle slaughter totaled 465000 head with an average weight of 1085 pounds. hog slaughter fell 12 percent to 231000 head. calves at 600 head. sheep and lambs at 72000 head, up 7 percent from April 1969. For January–April total production was 1023 million pounds, down from a year earlier.
The USDA and industry campaign to wipe out hog cholera saves farmers about 27 million dollars yearly, with net savings around 27 million after 13 million in federal and state costs. Officials urge intensified quarantines and market standards, noting reduced infection and ongoing indemnities as states move toward stamp-out and many are now hog-cholera free.
Lincoln spring and summer prospects for livestock indicate a steadier market. Allen Wellman of the University of Nebraska forecasts firmer hay and lamb prices into summer, with cattle prices edging up and hog and sheep slaughter patterns showing seasonal shifts.

Bellwood based Darren Angus Farm and Gordon Zeller and Son announce the sale of a 20 month old Angus bull calf named 1X Educator 17 PF. The bull, grandson of the 1962 Ml American Supreme Champion Futurity, was bought by S & W Angus Ranch of Purdum for $4,000 and will transfer ownership after the Nebraska Junior Angus Piet Day at the Zelter farm on June 15.
Lincoln Nebraska officials announce Nebraska has been designated as modified certified brucellosis free state by the United States Department of Agriculture after 16 years of work. Dr Twiehaus notes 64 000 beef and dairy herds in the program and 2.1 million cows affected, with Nebraska the 46th state to attain the status. Vaccination costs will shift to producers after June 30, and continued vaccination is required to maintain the status and avoid commerce restrictions.
