Coin proof sets drop after price hike in 1977
About two million Americans bought roughly 3.2 million proof sets from the U.S. Mint this year, totaling $1.91 in coins per set. Orders fell from 4.2 million in 1976 to under 3.2 million as prices rose from seven to nine dollars, a decline officials attribute to the Bicentennial appeal and new costs.
