Hardin backs 55000 limit on federal farmer payments

Secretary Clifford M. Hardin voiced support for a proposed 55000 per crop per year cap on federal payments to farmers to counter moves to drop it to 20000. He warned a lower limit could force cotton farmers from business and urged extending price supports and crop programs for nine years, noting current law allows higher sums but few would reach them. In 1989 data, five large landholders exceeded one million dollars, with one above four million, focusing on cotton wheat and feed grains. The Aquinas High School marching band, directed by Ken Kull, joined a parade in Wahoo and a festival in Dwight.
