Columbia Md New City Aims Yet Faces Critics And Benefits

Columbia Maryland, a 10 year old planned city founded by James W. Rouse, blends city amenities with suburban life and a strong civic culture. It attracts 45,000 residents and eyes 110,000, driven by location on the Baltimore Washington corridor. The compact villages, lack of visible streets, strict covenants, and active resident groups shape a hopeful, controversial community noted for safety, affluence, and diverse but integrated neighborhoods.
