Nebraska vote on beef checkoff may miss needed margin
Nebraska cattle producers show broad backing for a national beef checkoff program, but results may fail to reach the 66 percent threshold required for approval. In a 62-county tally, about 54 percent voted yes, with strong support in Lincoln and parts of the Panhandle, while Gage and Jefferson counties opposed. The plan aims to raise 30 to 40 million dollars for promotion and research, pending national tally and state filings. Separately, Jacqueline Crawford resigns as Nebraska Center for Women superintendent, effective by Sept 1, with a national search planned and potential interim leadership by Lucile Splinter if needed.

The plan follows federal guidelines with five mandatory actions such as lighting efficiency, car pools and public transit, procurement standards, insulation rules, and a right turn at stoplights. Dworak says it will be amended every 90 days and Gov Exon backs considering the mandates.
