Computerized irrigation scheduling could save Nebraska farmers millions
A pilot program on the Agriculture Computer Network uses gypsum moisture blocks and electrical resistance to track soil moisture. The system, led by AGNET and University of Nebraska engineers, predicts daily moisture depletion and guides irrigation to cut water and energy use by 30 to 35 percent, potentially up to 50 percent with advanced systems. The method relies on weekly farmer data, rainfall, and block readings to prevent over or under watering.
