Recreation program expands in Columbus City summers
Deb Gondringer reports the Columbus City summer recreation program enters its 2th session June 16 under director Mike Schujinder. The eight week program, funded by the Parks and Recreation Department, is open to all school aged children with divisions in baseball arts and crafts and tennis. Activities run in and out of parks citywide with flexible join anytime scheduling and weekly craft themes advancing toward a Hobo Days finale.

Hearing to mull stockyard act in Panhandle
Amarillo Texas UPI members of 805 Muse agriculture subcommittee and two U S senators will hold a field hearing Saturday to consider adjustments to the 1921 Packers and Stockyards Act. The session follows the January collapse of American Beef Packers Inc which left beef producers with about 25 million dollars in uncollectible checks. The panel chaired by Rep W R Poage will hear from House and Senate Agriculture members on how to require packers to pay promptly and avoid check floating as small and large producers face losses. American Beef’s shutdown affected panhandle plant workers and prompted Swift & Co to buy the facility for about 18 million dollars. Washington hearings on revising the law are planned for July 23-24.

Karen Langland Enters Miss Nebraska Pageant
Karen Langland, 19, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hirald Langland, will represent Columbus at the Miss Nebraska Pageant in Kearney July 14 to 19 sponsored by the Columbus Jaycees. A junior at the University of Nebraska majoring in business administration, she studied piano from age seven and will perform a musical piece from Piddler on the Hoof. Langland has appeared with Loyola Community Playhouse in Chicago and was 1873 Platte County Junior Miss, first runner up for state title. The pageant features 26 contestants. preliminaries begin Monday with finals July 17 18 and 19 at Kearney High School auditorium. Guests include Sandi Cramer Gartner Miss Nebraska 1973 and sister Lynn Cramer Omaha plus entertainers Tony Owens Kansas City Annette Green Imperial and Lynn Demmiel Gillespie Kearney.

Irrigation Boom Reported for Nebraska Growth

Agriculture Department Boosts Wheat and Corn Reserve Projections
The Agriculture Department raised forecasts for 1975-76 wheat and corn reserves amid expected strong grain exports from the Soviet Union. Wheat production seen at 22 billion bushels and corn at 6 billion, with higher carryover stock anticipated. Girls endure survival camp experience near Monroe
About two dozen Columbus Campfire Girls from first through 12th grade spent two days and two nights in a wooded wilderness camp near Monroe. Under Mrs. Hugh Poleon, they learned survival skills using minimal supplies, with emphasis on water and simple food. The program includes swimming, archery, crafts, and other activities funded largely by the United Fund and local bake sales. Family visits were minimized to avoid homesickness.
