Central City built a nine point lead and held on for a 1 point win over Lakeview. Lakeview struggled to score, falling to 1-11 as Vikings slip with a poor late run and halftime measures by coach Dennis P. Geraghty noted.

Reserve guard Bub Hutchins Hawkins came off the bench to score 24 points including 18 in the second quarter as the Nets snapped a 13 game slide with a win over the Chicago Bulls. Hawkins added three assists and three steals while shooting 7 of 7 in the pivotal second period to help overturn a nine point first quarter deficit. The Bulls fell to their 19th loss in 23 road games.
Tom Watson won the Crosby National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach by one stroke over Tony Jacklin. The Kansas City native, 27 and a former Stanford student who used to sneak onto Pebble Beach, endured late holes pressure to secure the $40,000 top prize.
Rising City recovered from a Friday defeat to beat Humphrey 60 to 4. Senior Dave Stuhr led with 19 points while Selden added 14 and 12. The Terriers pressured Humphrey and controlled rebounds 36 to 34 and shot over 50 percent.
Columbus Discoverers upset Bryan 64 61 for their first win of the season. Center Jim Rorabaugh led with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while teammates John Peterson and Mark Jilek added double-digit totals. Bryan’s Kelly Beck scored 19 as the Bears kept it tight through three quarters before Columbus pulled away late. Rathe’s squad improves to 1-10 and heads to Fremont next.
Fremont-Columbus Senior High wrapped up its dual wrestling season with two wins during the Apollo Conference night at South Sioux City. Captain Rudy Glur led with two pins while Collyn Florendo and Collyn Florendo and Tim Arlt delivered key wins as the team split with Hastings and Fremont, with strong JV support boosting records.

Saturday West Husker Conference tournament at Wakefield Central Tech at Platte and Lakeview at David City Columbus at Apollo in conference play at 7 30. Junior High competes in Great Plains Conference tournament. Millard visits Columbus for swimming at 4 30. Monday January 31 tournament at Lakeview.
Fourth ranked Lincoln Northeast rallied from an early Columbus lead to win 38 to 26. Columbus struggled with cold shooting and turnovers as Lincoln rode free throws and rebounding to the victory.
Bjorn Borg, 20, defeats Jimmy Connors 6-4 5-7 6-3 at Boca Raton to win the Grand Slam of Tennis with a $100,000 first prize. Connors earns $50,000 for second, Manuel Orantes $30,000 for third as Borg capitalizes on a poised baseline game.
