Value of harvests lag behind output in 1976
UPI reports that U.S. farmers increased wheat and corn production in 1976. Corn yield rose to a record 6.2 billion bushels valued at $14.742 billion, while the 2.147 billion bushel wheat crop was worth $6.201 billion, down from 1975. Prices per bushel fell for both crops, dragging total returns lower despite higher output. The Agriculture Department cited lower average prices as the main cause of the lag.
