Torrential rain lashed California triggering rock slides and power outages while Arctic air drove snow and freezing rain across the plains and North Central states. At least six deaths were linked to Northern California's storm as crews battled downed trees and outages.

In Gage County near the Odell Underpass on Neh 196 Beatrice teen Victor Heyes 16 died after a collision as a car driven by David Remmers 18 lost control and slid. A third car driven by Bruce Hancock 16 struck the Remmers vehicle broadside. Remmers Reyes and Hancock youths were all hospitalized in stable condition. The fatality marks the first traffic death in the county for the new year.
