Merrick SWCD to hold seventh annual awards banquet
Merrick County Soil and Water Conservation District Board announces their seventh annual awards banquet on Thursday January 22 at 6 30 pm at the Junior High Auditorium Contal City Urbina and rural residents are invited Mr and Mrs Ed Arney Clarks will receive a colored farm picture and Mr and Mrs Virgil Kula Silver Creek will receive an award They are the first to complete a Great Plains contract in the county Laird Wolfe and Dayle Williamson will attend as guests Tickets are on sale at the SCS office or via contact with several locals including John Jefferson Roy Tracy Dean Kyes Clarence Wake Monte Williams Harold Beck Alfred Bader and Paul Deichmann The Kulas completed a four year contract preserving irrigation water management and planted and fenced a windbreak of 803 Red Cedar trees plus 43 acres of native grasses and five wildlife acres The Great Plains Conservation Program is run by the local Conservation Service with contracts from three to five years and aims to tailor farm plans to each area’s needs and capabilities The program has been extended for 19 more years and Merrick County sits on the eastern edge of the Great Plains where contracts are available.

Nebraska scholarship program funded by Farmers Home Administration and State Department of Agriculture and Economic Development offers college and trade school aid for needy farm and ranch youths. Meat production drops in state in November
Nebraska red meat output fell 7 percent from November 1966 to 234 million pounds, with a 12 percent drop from October. Cattle slaughter reached 314000 head, hog slaughter 188000, calf slaughter up 100 head, and sheep and lamb slaughter rose 5 percent to 68500 head, per State Federal Division of Agricultural Statistics.
