In 1974 Columbus suffered 12.79 inches of precipitation, below the 24.98 inch standard, the driest year since 1956. May and August supplied 10.27 inches, while snowfall reached 22.5 inches, six inches below normal. The year also featured extreme cold early January and a peak 102 degrees in June and July.
UPI reports columnist Jack Anderson alleges the nuclear submarine Madison surfaced after scraping the hull of a Soviet sub in the North Sea on November 3. Pentagon spokesman William Beecher had no comment. Anderson claims both subs inspected damage on the surface but exchanged no messages.
United Press International reports heavy snowfall across the southeastern portion of Nebraska with hazardous highway conditions statewide. The National Weather Service forecast up to four inches of new snow, with limited visibility and snowpacked icy interstates, including I-80 between Omaha and North Platte, while light snowfall spread to nearly all areas except the Panhandle.
Washington reports three top Nixon aides Mitchell Haldeman and Ehrlichman convicted on conspiracy obstruction and lying in Watergate. All vow to appeal while awaiting sentencing, with Mitchell facing up to 43 years, Haldeman 25, and Ehrlichman 20. Mardian and Parkinson gains noted. Nixon to issue statement from San Clemente.
Moscow dispatch says Leonid Brezhnev, 6&-year-old Communist leader, is treated at a Moscow sanatorium and unavailable for comment. Western reporters note he was last seen Dec. 24 at the Supreme Soviet opening, with Cairo sources later confirming illness delayed his Middle East tour. Diplomats refused to detail illness.
Final United Press International count shows at least 194 people died on U.S. highways between 6 p.m. Tuesday and midnight New Year’s. The National Safety Council had projected 170 to 230 deaths for the 30 hour period and cited energy crisis and lower speeds as factors. The council said 1974 may close with about 10,095 fewer highway deaths than 1973.
Lawmakers and public figures react to the Watergate convictions of four Nixon aides. Elizabeth Holtzman calls Ford pardon disturbing. James F. Neal and Sam Ervin defend the verdict as justice served and a move toward closure. Howard Baker notes sympathy for defendants and families. Barker, Sturnis, and Martinez comment on jail not being a solution. Cox and Jaworski decline to comment.
The Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed Harold D. Nokes's first and second degree murder convictions in the Hoyt couple killings near Culbertson. It upheld consecutive life sentences after Nokes pleaded guilty, detailing a 1969 73 affair and a 1973 murder tied to blackmail fears. The dismemberment and lake disposal followed the alleged scheme.
Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas remained in serious condition after a New Year’s Eve stroke. He was treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, with anticoagulants to prevent clots. The 76 year old has had an electronic pacemaker since 1968 and is known for a long tenure on the bench.
