Battle over funds for Penn Central rail line
In Washington a Senate power struggle threatened to block emergency grants for Penn Central and Erie Lackawanna as lawmakers battled over a 347 million authorizing package. The railroad, facing payroll shortages, received 2.5 million in grants and 8 million in advances from DOT, with a further 12.8 million to come for maintenance equipment, to keep service running through the week while a new government plan to reorganize bankrupt Northeast lines is debated. Hartke moved to force a vote Wednesday on the Penn Central bill, needing a two thirds majority, as reformers push to curb filibuster powers. Senate leaders argued, but no side yielded.
