Six high school teams compete for the Big Ten Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Kearney State College pool. Hastings defends, with disqualifications shaping scoring as Fremont edges them 89 to 83 after a late relay issue.
Immanuel of Columbus will participate in an invitational basketball tournament Feb 28 March 1 at Christ Lutheran School Norfolk. Parochial teams compete for Class A Class B and overall tournament champion this weekend with opening games Saturday and finals Sunday afternoon.
Columbus Junior High closed its regular season with a 409 dual victory over Grand Island, the first win in seven outings for the Incal matmen. Coach Colman Brewer attributed improvement as the team stayed close in most matches, with losses by toe decisions. Pins by Behrens, Christie, and Schwartzer highlighted a strong lineup as Swanson, Brown, Grayhill, and Burge won their divisions. The conference meet is set for Feb 26 at Grand Island, with Walnut and Barr among league members including Hastings Kearney and Columbus.
Albion reports two football prospects, Chris Nelson and Brad Beckwith, received University of Nebraska athletic scholarships covering books tuition and room and board. Nelson, 17, excels academically with an 8.0 grade average and sports star status as a 6 5 quarterback and track standout, while Beckwith, 17, a 6 2 end in football and a three year letterman, is noted as a top blocker with strong track times.
Bellevue College Bruins defeated Platte College Raiders 91-81 on Thursday led by Rich Nansen with 28 points. John Howard added 19 for Bellevue while Kirk Muller had 18 for Platte. The Raiders slip to 6-6. Bellevue improves with a second win over the Raiders this season.
Columbus Junior High swept Walnut in a double header as their freshmen upset 74 70 and the eighth graders won 54 43. Dana Hellbusch led freshmen with 21 points while Paul Potter added 17 and Bob Fyfe 16. Walnut MVP Rick Martines scored 21 for Walnut. Ron Ernst led the eighth graders with 16.

Indianapolis UPI reports Butler University announced Billy Sylvester will replace retired Tony Hinkle as Bulldog head football coach. Sylvester, Butler’s quarterback in the late 1910s, had been finals backfield coach since 1964.
Denny McLain prepared to speak publicly as Commissioner Bowie Kuhn continued the gambling scandal investigation that could extend his suspension. Once baseball’s first 31 game winner since 1937, McLain left New York for Lakeland Florida after a 514 hour conference with Kaatin. He plans to address the press today or Saturday while details of the case remain disputed, including allegations from Sports Illustrated and statements from Kuhn and McLain’s lawyers.
Fullerton cruised past St Edward 91-50 Tuesday as George Palmer scored 20 for the Warriors who improve to 6-10. Tim Horacek added 4 and Steve Flaherty led St Edward with 18. Fullerton travels to Loup City Friday while St Edward hosts Osceola. Scoring by quarters shows a dominant first period before the late push.
Harald Krumland drilled a 714 in Boulevard Lanes as his team surged in Major League action. His 244 227 243 set the pace, matching the season’s second 700-plus alongside Stan Goltschall’s 752 Oct. 8 city mark. Other notable scores included Fiala 228 Nelson 221, plus Leckinger 209 and Teal 201 in varied leagues.
