Government beef import program misses scheduled level
The program failed to hold 495 imports to the level set by State and Agriculture Department figures. Officials warn against a repeat overrun in 1976. Despite voluntary restraint aimed at 4 180 billion pounds, preliminary estimates show about 1 209 billion pounds imported, 29 million above government estimates and 27 million above the trigger level in the federal meat import law.
