Nebraska's Jan 1 cattle on hand declined 5 percent from a year ago and 12 percent from two years ago, totaling 6.55 million head per State Federal Division of Agricultural Statistics. The heifer division rose 7 percent to 1.102 million, while cows fell 9 percent to 2.29 million and calves dropped 7 percent to 1.886 million.

New Trial Denied for Erwin Simants in Mass Murder Case
Lincoln County District Judge Hugh Stuart denied defense motions for a new trial for Erwin Charles Simants. Simants, 30, was sentenced to death in the Nebraska electric chair on six first degree murder convictions for killing six members of the Henry Kellie family in Sutherland on Oct. 18. The jury of seven women and five men found aggravating circumstances that outweighed the defense arguments.

Dry weather in Columbus drives concern over moisture deficit
Columbus faces persistent dry conditions as five of six months run below normal moisture. January's precipitation totaled .26 inch versus the 0.81 normal, while the six month span August through January shows 6.57 inches against a 9.13 norm. Snow was scarce with only three inches in January, and temperatures averaged 24.2 degrees, slightly above normal, with several subzero days early in the month.
