Washington AP reports the government will raise grazing fees for about nine million cattle and sheep on public lands in 1973. The Agriculture and Interior departments jointly announced increases affecting Forest Service, USDA lands and the Bureau of Land Management. The hike is 12 cents per animal unit month on BLM land and 1 cent on Forest Service land, prompting industry complaints of inflation and hardship.

Lincoln AP reports Daniel Ray Collins, 18, inmate at Nebraska Men's Reformatory, faces four felony counts including prison escape and kidnapping after using three large kitchen knives to seize a matron during an Oct 23 escape. He was captured 11 minutes later. preliminary hearing Jan. 12. He was serving 18 months to 2 years for auto theft and escape.
