Herbert Kiesling of Albion has been named for a special award by Funk's G-Hybrids representatives for a 173.08 bushel corn yield. The high yield, part of the Project 20N nationwide effort, came from 100 acres in 40 inch rows with 20,000 plants per acre, 20 pounds nitrogen per acre, and insecticide and herbicide use. Harvest occurred November 7 with grain at 25.25 percent moisture.
Lincoln based United Press International reports Nebraska November egg production rose due to higher output per chicken with 1 620 eggs per 100 hens, up 3 percent from a year earlier. Commercial hatcheries yielded 203 000 chicks, down 37 percent, while year to date production fell about 4 percent from 1968.
Government farm experts predict Nebraska 1969 pig crop at 4 929 000 head, seven percent below 1968. Avg pigs per litter 7.38, sows farrowing Sept 1 to Nov total 166 000, down from 186 000 in 1968. Farrowed pigs 1 228 000 vs 1 389 000 last year. Dec 1 hogs 2 830 000, down 12 percent. breeding hogs 440 000, nine percent fewer. Dec–Feb farrowings expected from 149 000 sows, up seven percent.
Federal officials urge Michigan Illinois Wisconsin Indiana regulator action to halt disposal of liquid pesticide wastes into urban sewer systems. The Lake Michigan study found minor residues in water soil and sediment but warned sewer dumping could raise pesticide burden and threaten wildlife and public health.
Nebraska's 1969 crop output reached a record value of 946 million dollars, up 10 percent from 1966 and 21 percent above 1968. Acreage harvested totaled 15.678 million, with record totals for corn, soybeans, sugar beets and dry beans and multiple per acre yield records across crops.
