Holiday travelers faced heavy roads as celebrations wound down. By 10 a.m. CST at least 278 people had died in weekend traffic with Texas leading states at 24 fatalities in single-vehicle crashes. Geneva Missouri and Indiana incidents added to the toll, including two children killed in a car train collision and three New Albany youths killed while fleeing police in a stolen car.

President Carter returned to Washington after a Christmas in Georgia and announced that Israeli Prime Minister Begin and Egyptian President Sadat report talks are very successful. He noted a meeting set for January 15 in Egypt and Jerusalem, with possible participation by Secretary of State Vance. Sunny skies were forecast for Nebraska with a warming trend through the week. Light snow occurred in the north central and parts of the northeast, with a chance of light snow on Thursday and Friday. A stationary front from eastern Montana through western Nebraska to western Kansas kept mild Pacific air separated from arctic air.
