United States to sell Sudan fighter jets and radar

Washington reports the United States plans to sell Sudan a squadron of model fighter interceptors and ground radar to bolster its air defense. Officials warn Egypt may request the same, as Sudan and Egypt grow closer. congressional opposition is anticipated to be limited for Sudan but possible for Egypt due to Israel allies. Explosion toll climbs to 32 in Westwego accident

The death toll from the worst grain industry accident rose to 32 as rescue workers recovered more victims from an office complex crushed by concrete and steel. Four more people believed trapped were under girders.

Rescue Efforts Continue After Continental Grain Elevator Blast

Workers recovered three more bodies from the Continental Grain Co. elevator wreckage as memorial services were held at a nearby Catholic church. New Orleans Archbishop Philip M. Hannan led the services while rescue crews warned it could take hours or days to pull all victims from the tangled debris. One rescuer recalled seeing a body with a telephone receiver still in his hand.

Telegram to publish Monday notice for Columbus papers

The Columbus Telegram will publish Monday December 26 with presstime around noon instead of 2 30 p m. The business office closes all day and most offices and agencies close. Some Columbus stores will be open and some closed is the overall pattern.

Callihan Named Operations Manager of County Ag Society

Bill Calihan of Columbus was named the new operations manager of the Prairie County Agricultural Society. Lee Rupp, chair of the board of managers, announced the appointment effective Jan. 1. He cited growth in facilities and activities and said the move will support future expansion. Calihan has long been with Agricultural Park and previously served as race track superintendent. His duties include promotion, public relations, maintenance supervision, new construction, and liaison with Ag Bark users. Warren Albert, rate manager, Ken Torngon, farm manager, and Frank Aeri, safety tester, will stay in their current roles.

G T Board backs NPPD in LES rate dispute

The Nebraska Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative board at Columbus endorsed terminating 175000 KW sales to the Lincoln Electric System and urged LES to relinquish claims to Nebraska produced power. LES plans to buy elsewhere until its new Wyoming plant is ready, while G T backs NPPD amid potential rural lawsuits. Custer Public Power District in Broken Bow passed a similar resolution.
