UPI reports at 1 p.m. the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 974.07, up 4.60 points, with the Transportation, Utilities and Stock average also showing gains. The Industrials led and overall market breadth was positive across sectors.
Grain futures and livestock bids show mixed moves with cattle and calves mostly lower across weights while hogs trend varied. Sows rise modestly as slaughter lambs stay steady and market futures reflect light activity and Wednesday estimates for cattle and calves, hogs, and sheep.
Leigh Cor manity School undertakes a self evaluation with a steering committee and subcommittees to assess philosophy objectives curriculum student activities media services facilities and staff. The first subcommittee meeting is Jan 5 at 7 p.m. in the high school gym.

St Paul Lutheran at 8 p.m. enacts a Nativity written by the staff with narration. First United Church of Christ offers Festival of Carols and Holy Communion at 5:30 p.m. St Mary Catholic plans a midnight Mass and two daytime Masses with visiting clergy.
The Modern Mrs. Club held a Christmas party at Mrs. Larry Janssen’s home. Secret sisters were revealed, new names drawn, and plans made for a January dinner to entertain husbands. A donation to Children’s Hospital in Omaha was approved and a grandfather at Columbus Manor was adopted. Yahtzee prizes went to three members and a door prize to another. The next meeting is January 18 at Mrs. John Weinhoff’s home.
Midwestern agriculture commissioners from 11 states gathered in Denver to discuss Carter administration agriculture policy. They welcomed Rep. Bob Bergland as secretary designate and urged quick talks on quotas, marketing, drought relief, and farm credit while noting need for key deputy and assistant appointments.

Mrs. Agnes Schmid of Columbus was feted at St. Peter Hall on Sunday for her 80th birthday. Hosts were her children and spouses, with seventy relatives attending and guests including sisters Rose Smith Anna Jagx and Father Robert Roh plus fifteen grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren.
Rodney Furby arrived Friday and will visit his parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Furby and area relatives until June 6. The Mark family returned Sunday after visiting in Lodgepole with Rev Date Mark and his son Brian.
