Prison inmate releases 23 held as hostages

A prison inmate, Haywond Quinn, 34, seized 23 visitors for about five hours at Central State Prison in Nashville after failing to gain parole. Small nations at UN Assembly claim progress in session

At the United Nations General Assembly the smaller nations say they prevailed on key votes against big powers. Angie Brooks of Liberia led as the second woman president in the session, which avoided formal debate on the Middle East and sent several issues back to Geneva. The assembly rejected a US Soviet plan to ban ocean floor nuclear arms, barred tear gas and defoliants from war, and referred the Palestine refugee issue to the Security Council despite US objections.

Area students in recital Thursday in Columbus area

Three Columbus area students appear in a Kearney State College music recital. Lorin Barber a freshman vocal solo, Carolee Wardeman a Lindsay junior piano solo, and Connie Hradee a Clarkson freshman instrumental solo perform. Recital begins at 4 30 p.m. in Otto Olson Auditorium with no admission charge and the public invited.
