Ford lights national Christmas tree in Pageant of Peace
President Ford illuminated the 45 foot Colorado blue spruce on the Ellipse beside the White House for the Pageant of Peace ceremony. About 10 000 spectators witnessed the switch on as Ford urged a rededication to timeless values and peaceful brotherhood among all peoples. A minor controversy over his Michigan professorship joke was cleared up by Ron Nessen. A brief White House fire caused by an overheating battery charger was contained with no injuries.
